The $400 million, three-year contract for silicon solar cells from Suniva was announced today by Minnesota-based solar panel producer Heliene. In the next months, Suniva plans to recommence producing solar cells at its facility in Georgia.
As of right now, only Ohio-made First Solar thin-film solar panels using cadmium telluride, produced using a special vapour deposition method that counts as cell manufacturing, are eligible for the full domestic content bonus as specified. Heliene solar panels will be the first to meet the domestic content bonus requirements using American-made cells since the Suniva solar cell facility is probably going to be the first silicon cell manufacturing operations to launch in the US this year.
