UL Solutions has introduced a new testing protocol, UL 9540B, to assess the fire propagation behavior of residential battery energy storage systems (BESS). This protocol addresses concerns from fire service organizations and aims to enhance the safety of BESS installations.
UL 9540B evaluates how a BESS reacts if a thermal runaway event leads to an internal fire. The test includes a robust ignition scenario and enhanced acceptance criteria to simulate real-world conditions.
